New York City is making cyclists go to remedial biker's ed classes
New York City is treating wayward cyclists the same way a driver who's racked up one too many DUIs might be: It's sending them to class to review the basic rules of the road. The New York Times reports:
This spring, the Midtown Community Court began sentencing cyclists who had been issued tickets for certain offenses in and around Midtown Manhattan to a class to learn about bicycles and traffic.
Classes are cool. Licenses would be better. But I think a 007 kind of gun that disintegrates the disobedient one--biker, cyclist, car driver, parked truck driver--right where they are disobeying would be even better. Complete disintegration, that is--no trash to have to ride/walk over/through afterward.

I live in what is commonly referred to Rose City, The City of Roses, and Bridge City aka Portland, OR, where, according to Portlandia, the young go to retire. It is also the city of bicyclists. Color coded stopping zones, bike lanes, and turning lanes especially for bicyclists and a rating of one of the most bike friendly in the country. Pedestrians beware, the war between bicyclist and motorist is on.

Nah, that war has been on for a long time. However, you now have me concerned about pedestrians…should we have a pedestrian lane? Wait, that’s called a sidewalk, isn’t it? But no, bicycles tend to take that over sometimes as well. How about an elevated bridge for walkers?

One of my favorite fantasy authors, actually he’s pretty eclectic, Piers Anthony, has a scene in one of his books where protagonist has to pass through a magical challenge in three stages: as a swimmer, as a boater, and as a water skier (I think). At each stage his life is endangered by the self-centered disregard of other persons travelling by the other modes. At the end of the challenge, he realizes he was the offender in each circumstance.

Only goes to show, fantasy is what makes the world go round. To the real world.
